EC(h)O_bklyn_04
(part of psy.geo.conflux 2004 / may 13-16, 2004)
In partnership with Brooklyn-based transmission arts
collective free103point9
and the Brooklyn Interactive Outreach Network (aka BION), Michelle
Nagai and Treetheater Projects invite you to participate in
EC(h)O_bklyn_04, a multi-day, multi-site listening engagement.
EC(h)O_bklyn_04 is part of SOUS LES PAVÉS, LA RADIO!, a
collection of four events being sponsored under the free103point9
umbrella and presented as part of Psy.Geo.Conflux 2004,May
13-16 in New York City.
Sharing the city with a host of psychogeography events and
experiments, EC(h)O_bklyn_04 will encourage listeners to hear,
experience, remember, share, engage and activate the sonic landscapes
of Williamsburg, Bushwick and Greenpoint Brooklyn. Follow the EC(h)OLOCATOR link to learn more about the
intent behind EC(h)O_bklyn_04.
Four types of events will take place as part of
EC(h)O_bklyn_04 and all are free and open to the general public:
Soundwalk:
The soundwalk is a practice of focused listening in which one moves
through an environment with complete attention to sound. Any
environment, at any time of day or night, can provide space for
soundwalking. Sometimes the walks are guided by a written or verbal
instruction (a "score") and sometimes not. Sometimes the walker
activates the soundscape - "playing along" with the sounds - using the
voice, musical instruments or objects encountered along the way.
Soundwalking provides an opportunity to do nothing but listen. An
opportunity for the brain, ears, body, mind and soul to wake up and
tune in. Soundwalking invites the listener to consider his or her
relationship to the sounding world and all that inhabits it.
Field Recording Xtravaganza:
Capturing the sounds of a place while still being conscious of actually
listening to that place is an art. Seasoned field recordists will share
equipment and expertise as we travel through noisy and quiet parts of
the Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Bushwick soundscapes with microphones
and recording gear in tow. We'll be capturing sounds to use in the live
broadcast (see below). No experience or equipment is necessary and kids
are welcome to attend.
Blindfolded Private Listening Walk:
There is a great deal of sound and sensation that goes unnoticed when
our eyes dominate our experience of the world. Moving through space
without relying on vision can bring unexpected emotional and physical
sensations to the forefront. Led by conscientious individuals who will
safely guide you through a private sensory-expanding listening
experience.
Community Radio Broadcast:
This is a "no experience required" event - all are invited to
contribute to the live broadcast of sounds collected from the
Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick neighborhoods. Bring your own
local recordings or find some you like from what we've gathered during
the project. This live broadcast will be aired by BION and streamed on
the internet through free103point9 (ok, your chance to be a broadcast
media star!). There will also be radios spread throughout our makeshift
"broadcast studio" for on site performers and audience to hear what's
going on. Microphones out the window will pick up more sounds of the
neighborhood. Participants are invited to stop by, turn some knobs,
press some buttons and contribute to changing the sound of what's
playing on OUR radio. Snacks, festivities, "how-to" info and sound art
experimentation will abound.
Psy.Geo.Conflux 2004 is the second in an annual series
dedicated to current artistic and social investigations in
psychogeography (the study of the effects of the geographic environment
on the emotions and behavior of individuals). Part festival and part
conference, it brings together visual and sound artists, writers, urban
adventurers and the public to explore the physical and psychological
landscape of the city.
This webpage is an information resource for those wishing to
participate in any of the EC(h)O_bklyn events. To learn more about the
other free103point9 events, or other activities ocurring as part of the
Psy.Geo.Conflux, please visit the psy.geo website or take a walk over
to the Conflux headquarters at
Participant Inc., 95 Rivington St. between Orchard and Ludlow.
